This test is done on serum(3-5 ml clotted blood) or plasma.
Sample can be stored at 4C for 2days.For longer period freeze the sample.
This is one of the harmone which is produced by the Adrenal cortex in respose to ACTH stimulation.
This harmone is invoved in the metabolism of the body .
There is diurnal variation in secretion of cortisol in the morning and as well evening or midnight cortisol sample.
Random sample is not useful.

Serum PM 2—9 microgramme/ dL
Urine 30—100 microgramme/dL
Increased in
1.Cushing syndrome,( Pituitry disease)
2.adrenal adenoma and carcinoma.
Decreased in
1.Addison disease.
2.congenital adrenal hyperplasia ( adrenogenital syndrome )
3.Hypopituitrism.
